Okay, so we stole "Sickmas" from Kathryn, but it's a clever way to refer to our holidays. We left for Detroit on December 18th and missed our flight. We fell asleep at the gate and they moved our gate. We were able to get a flight out at 12:00 (four hours later), but in the meantime, we had a few drinks and laughed about it.
We arrived at the lakehouse Saturday night and the next day Michelle’s cousins Alison and Darren came to visit. Brett wanted to try cross-country skiing so we gave it a shot. Alison had the hardest time with it and we were laughing so hard we couldn’t stand up straight.
Bryce, Kathryn and the kids showed up Monday. We wanted to take Evan sledding for his first time so we put on his snow suit and, after a few tries to get used to it, he LOVED it! I'll add a video later today.
We celebrated Christmas on Wednesday morning and we were all very blessed. It was just so wonderful to have everyone together. Brett also played his first game of euchre.
Unfortunately, starting Wednesday, an illness started winding its way through our family. By Saturday, everyone but Kathryn and Brett had caught some sort of flu or something. We left for Texas on Thursday afternoon after visiting Michelle’s best friends Niki and Elise. This was the first time Brett has met Michelle’s childhood friends and he survived.
When we arrived back in Tyler, Michelle started running a fever and ended up being bed-bound with illness almost continuously until Sunday morning when they left. This was Michelle’s first Christmas with Brett’s family. It was wonderful to spend Christmas with Wendy, Ray and Bry, but it was disappointing for Michelle to be sick the whole time. We’ll have to head back up to Tyler again soon so we can actually spend some quality time with everyone. As you can see from the pictures, Brett’s family has a tradition where you need to wear a bow on your head while unwrapping presents. Even Ben participated.
Overall, it was wonderful to see family and dear friends. We are so lucky to have each other.
Merry Christmas everyone and Happy New Year!
